Earthquake - The Aftermath
Looking back at my post on Boxing day about the earthquake, the article appears to make too light of what has turned into one of the biggest humanitarian tragedies in the last hundred years. I have decided to leave the article as is, because that’s how I felt at the time of writing (I had no idea at all of just how extensive the fallout from the quake would become when I wrote about it on Boxing Day morning).
In some sadly related news, reports are coming in from Phuket about the bodies of dead tourists being looted. I don’t know what to say. I’m speechless.
Also, In this article it is stated that
“Australia has already donated $10 million to the relief effort, with more help to come. But many of the world’s wealthiest countries have pledged less than $40 million between them so far. Britain has chipped in only $A1.7 million, barely topping the $1.5 million that Victoria pledged yesterday…The US have given twice as much as Australia in dollar terms, but given their population is about 13 times our size, Australia has probably been the most generous, most responsive donor so far”
There have been very few times in my life when I’ve been genuinely proud of being Australian. Today is one of them.
To the few people who’ve contacted me to make sure I’m safe, thank you.
